Christmas Day Tragedies: 11 Dead, 19 Injured In Two Separate Accidents Along Sagamu-Benin, Lagos-Ibadan Expressways

No fewer than 11 persons and 19 others are confirmed dead and injured following two separate road crashes along Sagamu-Benin and Lagos-Ibadan expressways on Christmas Day.

Out of the number, seven persons were confirmed dead while seven others sustained varying degrees of injuries in one of the accidents involving a Mercedes Benz luxury bus at Ososa bridge on the Sagamu- Benin expressway on Saturday.

The Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun, Ahmed Umar confirmed the incident to newsmen in Abeokuta.

Umar explained that the accident occured at 12:20a.m and it was caused by excessive speed, wrongful overtaking and loss of control.

The sector commander stated that a total of 63 persons were involved in the accident which comprised of 40 male adult, 15 female adult, five male children and three female children

He said that seven persons sustained injuries which comprised three male adults and four female adults.

Umar explained that among the dead seven persons were three male adults and four female adults.

He said that 49 persons including 34 male adult, seven female adult, five male children and three female children, escaped unhurt.

He added that the injured victims were rendered first aid treatment while the deceased were deposited at the State Hospital Mortuary, Ijebu Ode.

Similar, among the total numbers, six persons were confirmed dead while 12 others sustained varying degrees of injuries in the second accident which involved a Toyota Hiace bus and Iveco trailer opposite ELANLAN construction zone on Lagos-Ibadan expressway on Saturday.

The Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun, Ahmed Umar, while also confirming the incident to journalists in Abeokuta, stated that the crash occurred at 3:20a.m.

He added that the suspected causes of the crash were road obstruction, excessive speed and loss of control on the part of the trailer driver.

He said that the two vehicles involved included a Toyota Hiace bus marked MK A567 XZ and an Iveco trailer with registration number XF 854 KTN .

The FRSC boss noted that the injured victims were taken to different hospitals, saying some were taken to Lagos State Accident and Emergency Unit, Ojota, some to Divine Touch Hospital, Ibafo and Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu.

Umar stated that the deceased were deposited at Idera Mortuary Sagamu.

“A total sum of N127,900 was recovered from the crash scene,” he said.

The sector commander advised motorists to drive cautiously and always obey traffic rules and regulations.

The sector commander cautioned motorists on dangerous driving especially at this period of high vehicular movement and night travel when visibility is poor.

He advised motorists to drive defensively, maintain safe speed, avoid night travels and obey traffic rules and regulations.
