Suspected soldiers on Friday night, Eve of Christmas, reportedly stormed Akpawfu community in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State, shooting sporadically into the air.
Sources said the gunmen engaged in heavy shootings until Saturday morning, while forlorn villagers scampered for safety.
The suspected soldiers reportedly arrived the community at about midnight, disrupting the Christmas Eve celebration and turning the mood into one of fear and apprehension.
“This is happening in my own village Agudene Akpawfu. We don’t know what we have done to these people.
“One of the boys they went to his house was brutally beaten up; we are not sure he will survive it.
“They are still here up to this morning. As I speak to you, I am in hiding.
“People have run away for fear,” a source told News Express on phone.
Confirming the attack, the traditional ruler of Akpawfu Community, His Royal Highness Igwe Christopher Nnamani, said he had reported the case to the Divisional Police Officer in the area who promised to get back to him.
The traditional ruler said some villagers have already been reported missing.
“The situation is not very clear yet and my house is far from Agudene.
“I have sent my people there and will be in a better position to talk if you can call or come to my palace in the evening,” he said.
The raid on Akpawfu has been consistent in recent times causing fear among villagers most of whom are said to be fleeing the community.
When contacted the Spokesperson of 82 Army Division Enugu, Abubakar Abdullahi, reportedly said he was not aware.
