Delta Govt Shuts Private School Where 19-Month-Old Was Caned To Death

Ola ‘Kiya, Reporting

The Delta State government has proscribed Arise And Shine Nursery and Primary School, Asaba where a 19-year-old Obinna Udeze was allegedly caned to death by the proprietor and her son for playfully messing up himself with water.

Obinna was reportedly given 31 strokes of the cane for playing with water and getting himself wet in the process.

The mother of the victim had reported that the act was perpetrated by the school proprietress and her son, who allegedly tied the hands and legs of the baby before flogging him to coma.

The woman and her son, who were initially in police custody but released due to an agreement with the victim’s family, were later rearrested on Saturday after information filtered in that the baby had died.

The baby, who went unconscious after receiving the strokes of the cane, later died at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba, where he was being attended to by doctors.

Meanwhile, the Delta State government shut the school on Sunday as announced by Ossai Ovie Success, Special Assistant to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa on Special Duties on his Facebook page.

Speaking on the shutdown of the school, Ossai said: “We just closed the school in Asaba where that young boy was flogged to death.

“The Delta State government will always protect the lives and property of everyone living in Delta State.

“When I said we will make sure justice is done, some of you said Ossai Ovie Success has come again.

“Now you can see the action we have taken as a government,” he asserted.

He further noted that the Commissioner for Primary Education, Hon Chika Ossai, through the Permanent Secretary led the team that sealed the school’s premises located at Camp 74 in Asaba, Oshimili South Local Government Area.

“We have also arrested the proprietress of the school and her son who were involved in the alleged crime and investigation is still ongoing,” the statement further disclosed.

It was gathered that the said pupil received 31 strokes of the cain and later died at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba, while being attended to by doctors.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Bright Edafe, who confirmed the incident, said the suspects were in custody of the command while discreet investigation has been embarked on.
