Diary of a Teacher (DoT) with Titilope Ogundele

‘Excuse Me Aunty, Are You A Virgin?’

I was among the Batch-A N-Power candidates that were recruited during President Buhari’s first tenure.

I was posted to one of the prestigious public secondary schools in the city of Ibadan. I, alongside some other colleagues, served on full time; we were going to work every day, just like regular government paid teachers.

Then, I had to teach Christian Religious Studies (CRS); that was the vacant post in the school then as they already had three English teachers in the junior section where I was posted to.

One day, I was teaching JSS 2 students and the topic was about Mary, the mother of Jesus and her fiancée, Joseph.

I explained to them that despite the fact that Mary and Joseph were engaged to be married, they did not engage in sex.

I explained that culturally and spiritually, pre-marital sex was wrong. Then I told them to ensure that they do not engage in premarital sex, and if they were already having sex, they should stop it.

As I was explaining, one of the students raised her hand, indicating that she had a question. ‘Alright, what is your question?’ I asked.

‘Aunty, are you a virgin?’ That was her question, and she asked right before the whole class. They were about 70 in a class.

The class was silent and all eyes were on me, expecting my response; they all knew I was not married.

I was shocked and speechless, but I knew I had to answer the question. Meanwhile, I told her she was not supposed to ask me such a question, not even in public.

So, did I answer the question? Yes, I did.

Did I tell the truth? Of course, I did! Right before the whole class…..
