THERE’S palpable fears in Udu and Uvwie local government areas of Delta State over a fallen petrol-laden tanker lying across the popular Udu bridge in Udu.
The cause of the tanker’s fall at Sawmill/Harbour Market area is being attributed to a sudden loss of control due to break failure.
Sources said besides the tanker gushing out petrol, a heavy gridlock has enveloped the entire area with motorists unable to access Udu and Uvwie.
Motorists are said to have resorted to seeking alternative in Udu Local Government Area via the NPA/DSC ExpressWay.
It was gathered that the truck was headed from Enerhen in Uvwie Local Government Area to Udu Local Government Area when it lost control.
Although men of the Delta State Fire Service have been stationed at the scene to forestall any possible fire outbreak, some residents are said to be scooping from the gushing fuel.
Security agents have also taken strategic positions at the scene to divert motorists from the spot to avert explosion.
Meanwhile, the tanker is said to have knocked off parts of the dilapidated rails of the bridge.
Some residents are said to have thrown caution to the wind as they jostled to scoop fuel from the slanted point of the tanker where petrol is gushed out while others are reportedly evacuating the area over the fear of an explosion.
A road user, simply identified as Jonathan, while lamenting the situation, pleaded with the relevant authorities to clear the blocked route for easy access.
