First Lady Oluremi Tinubu Advocates Free HIV/AIDS Treatment During Delta Visit

NIGERIA’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called for free treatment programmes for patients living with HIV/AIDS across the country.

Speaking on Tuesday during a visit to the Delta State Traditional Rulers Council in Asaba, she highlighted the impact of HIV/AIDS, particularly on young people. She urged traditional rulers to raise awareness and advocate for critical health issues, including the elimination of female genital mutilation.

Tinubu stated, “Additionally, there is an education-focused campaign called Flow with Confidence, which provides free sanitary pads to girls in rural areas to prevent school absences during menstruation.”

She also noted that she had secured significant funding for tuberculosis treatment and reaffirmed her commitment to giving back to society through donations and advocacy.

Health Programme for Midwives

Earlier, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori welcomed the First Lady, who was in the state to distribute 10,000 professional kits (Crocs and scrubs) to midwives in the South-South region. The initiative is part of the health programme under her Renewed Hope Initiative.

Oborevwori said, “This laudable programme has already been implemented in the North-Central and North-West geo-political zones of the country.

“Today is the turn of the South-South, and the First Lady has chosen Delta State to flag off the programme for the Niger Delta region.

“Tomorrow, Her Excellency, in collaboration with the Organisation of African First Ladies for Development, will launch the Free-to-Shine initiative (South-South region), an enlightenment campaign to combat HIV/AIDS and other public health challenges affecting women of reproductive age.”

Traditional Rulers Commend First Lady

Chairman of the Delta State Traditional Rulers Council and Orodje of Okpe Kingdom, HRM Maj Gen Felix Mujakperuo, commended Senator Tinubu for her visit and praised President Bola Tinubu for ongoing road construction projects in the state, including the Benin-Asaba Expressway, Benin-Warri Expressway, and the access road to the Second Niger Bridge.

He said, “We are proud of you as a virtuous woman who has stood by your husband in navigating the political landscape of this nation.

“I can assure you that we Deltans respect our in-laws. Just yesterday, one of us here, the Asagba of Asaba, Obi Professor Epiphany Azinge, shared that when he visited Mr President, he was described as a progressive governor.

“In the same venue, the Honourable Minister for Works, Senator David Umahi, also praised Governor Oborevwori as a hardworking leader who has turned Delta State into a massive construction site.

“With all he has done, His Excellency, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, deserves a second term because we do not want these projects to be abandoned.

“I also want to thank you for your care for Nigerian women, especially the young ones. We have followed your work closely and are very proud of you.”

Governor Oborevwori, alongside his wife, Deputy Governor Sir Monday Onyeme, and other dignitaries, had earlier received the First Lady and her delegation at Asaba International Airport.
