Ilori Ogunmola With Agency Report
A yet-to-be-named three-year-old child has accidentally shot their mother dead in front of their horrified grandmother in South Carolina, USA.
This is just as an advocacy group, Everytown for Gun Safety, has released an analysis that revealed there have been 194 unintentional shootings by children in the US so far in 2022.
This, it said, resulted in 82 deaths and 123 injuries, adding that ‘every year, hundreds of children in the U.S. gain access to firearms and unintentionally shoot themselves or someone else.’
In the shocking incident, which happened just before 8:00a.m on Wednesday, the three-year-old took the unsecured gun and killed their mother, Cora Lyn Bush at their home in Spartanburg.
Her death was reportedly witnessed by her mother, the child’s grandmother. Neither the grandmother nor child has been named by authorities.
The sheriff’s office added, in a Facebook post, that the mother, who was 33, died two hours later in a local hospital.
They said: ‘Please keep the family of Ms. Bush in your thoughts and prayers during this time of loss and grief.’
After her daughter was taken to hospital, the child’s grandmother narrated how the incident unfolded.
She said that the three-year-old had gained access to an unsecured firearm and was responsible for the death of her daughter.
It happened just before 8:00a.m on Wednesday when the child took the unsecured gun.
They were at home in Spartanburg, South Carolina, when the shooting happened.
The mother died two hours after the shooting in a local hospital.
An investigation is said to be ongoing into the death.
However, The Spartanburg Sherriff’s Office said that her account ‘corroborated with both the evidence at the scene and the injury to the victim.’
They added: ‘Although our investigation remains active, all indications are this incident was a result of the young child gaining access to an unsecured firearm, which resulted in the mother being accidentally shot and later passing away at the hospital.’
No further information has been released by authorities.
An autopsy into the 33-year-old’s death was scheduled to take place on Thursday.
Stonix News reports that this is another tragic incident involving a gun and comes after a 12-year-old boy accidentally shot his mother dead on August 6.
He had originally told investigators that she was killed by an intruder in the family’s Forestdale, Alabama home.
Nigerian Ayobiyi Cook, a nurse, who friends called ‘Yo-Yo’, was found dead in the suburban home on the 2400 block of Freemont Avenue after midnight on August 6.
The youth, who was not identified by investigators with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, had originally told police that an intruder had entered their house, shot his mother and then ran away.
‘The child originally fabricated a story that detectives determined was not possible,’ Deputy Chief David Agee said.
‘After investigation, Sheriff’s Detectives were able to determine that the victim’s 12-year-old son unintentionally discharged a firearm striking his mother causing her death.’
After more probing, the boy finally changed his story, saying he killed his mother unintentionally.
In another trafedy in March, a little boy accidentally killed his mother when he found a gun while he was sitting inside a car with his mother Daejah Bennett, 22, and father Romell Watson, 23.
The incident happened in Chicago after the boy was playing with the gun and pointed it and fired a shot in his mother’s neck.
She was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
