How 19 Wedding Guests Perished In Plateau Accident

TONGUES are still wagging amid deep sorrowing following a fatal road accident claimed no fewer than 19 wedding guests at the weekend in the Kwana Maciji area in Pankshin Local Government Area of Plateau State.

Besides the dead, 11 others, who were also on the ill-fated wedding ceremony trip from Kano State, are still languishing in various medical facilities in the state.

The Chairman of the Pankshin Local Government Area Emergency Management Committee, John Dasar, who confirmed the tragic incident, said the victims came from Kano State to attend the wedding in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.

He said they were on their way back to Kano State when the accident happened, adding that as the travellers were being helped out of the affected vehicle, it caught fire, leaving the 19 persons who had not been evacuated burnt.

“The accident happened on Saturday; the people were from Kano; they came for a wedding ceremony at Barkin Ladi.

“They were returning home and were to pass through Gindiri to Bauchi which is a shorter route.

“The driver and a few others survived, but 19 of them were burnt beyond recognition because when the accident happened, the people were being helped out of the vehicle when it caught fire and trapped the deceased,” he narrated.

Stonix News reports that the survivors were rushed to the Pankshin General Hospital and on Sunday, by the Chairman of the Pankshin Local Government Area, Felix Gonung, other officials of the local government area and security agents.

It was further gathered that Gonung arranged for the transfer of the critically-injured victims to the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) for proper medical care.

Those with minor injuries were treated and transported back to Kano State.

Worried by the manner the tragic accident came by, Gonung urged road users to exercise caution and adhere to safety regulations to prevent such tragedies.

On his part, an eyewitness, Citizen Maxwell Shiktong, said the accident involved a bus carrying 30 passengers, including adults and children.

According to him, the vehicle had a brake failure, rammed a tree, and burst into flames.

However, the Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), Pankshin Chapter, wasted no time in arranging for the burial rites of the deceased according to Islamic injunction.
