AMID acute economic hardship and hunger in Nigeria, an armed robbery gang, during a raid on houses, swooped on pots of soup and food to beat hunger.
The incident occurred on Wednesday at the Mbukpa, Ambo and Adak Uko areas of Calabar South Local Area of Cross River State, Nigeria.
Stonix News reports that calabarians are good at culinary arts and popular rich soups such as idikaikong among others.
The Guardian reported that though burglary was a regular occurrence in these areas, the focus on pots of soup and food items by the men of the underworld was astonishing to the residents.
The robbers were said to have begun their operation at about 2:00 a.m., forced doors and uprooted burglaries, and beat up residents in the Adak Uko neighbourhood to have their way.
They also reportedly warned residents not to raise the alarm, warning that their mission was not to shed blood, but confiscate victuals and valuables.
One of the residents, identified simply as Ekpeno, said: “The gang wielded machetes and were very smart.
“They pulled down the burglaries and gained entry into the living room and kitchen.
“My neighbour was hit on the forehead for screaming, but the men told her in Efik language that they did not come to kill, but needed food and money.”
Ekpeno said though policemen from Mbukpa Division were alerted, they only responded after the robbers had completed their task and bolted away.
The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Irene Ugbo, feigned ignorance of the incident.
