ISWAP Invades Borno Community, Kills 23 IDPs

Muhammed Abubakar, Reporting

Suspected members of the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) have invaded Mukdala village, located about 10 kilometres north to Dikwa town, killing no fewer than 23 internally displaced persons.

The terrorists‘ attack, which occurred on Wednesday, was confirmed by the Borno State Commissioner of Police, (CP) Abdu Umar, while briefing journalists on Saturday.

The officer, however, noted that victims of the attack were not metal scavengers, but IDPs as erroneously reported by some media outfits.

He said from investigations carried out, the victims were IDPs, adding that attacks from the terrorists have been subsiding over time given the level of concerted efforts made by security agencies.

CP Abdu said: “I am just telling you that I have interacted with the chairman of metal scavengers; he is saying that those ones are not scavengers, they are members of an IDP’s camp who want to earn a living.

“The story given by the media says scavengers, but the Chairman of metal scavengers is now saying none of them is their member.

“None of them is their member, because they have their registered members and that is the state, where we should investigate the incident and come out with report.

“They have their guidelines in buying these scraps, the Chairman of metal scavengers is just here behind you, you can ask him, so that you get more facts from him.

“In Borno State, we cannot say even by estimation that the number of people that are dying is close to the number of people that have died last year.

“The security agencies, the military and others are working seriously very hard, you can now see that there is only isolated attacks and we cannot rule out isolated because we are coming out of the insurgency.

“Borno State is normalising, things are coming back to normalcy because of the efforts of the security agencies, so we are in the forefront trying to bring in peace and I can testify that there is relative peace ” he added.
