JUST IN: Appeal Court Upholds Ruling Banning VIO From Public Roads

Muhammed Abubakar, Reporting

THE Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, has upheld the judgement of the Federal High Court, delivered on 4 October 2024, which restrains the Directorate of Road Traffic Services (commonly known as VIO) from stopping, impounding, or confiscating vehicles on public roads, as well as imposing fines on motorists.

A three-member panel of Justices of the appellate court, delivering judgment on Thursday, resolved all three issues raised for determination against the appellant, the Directorate of Road Traffic Services.

Justice Oyejoju Oyebiola Oyewumi, who read the lead judgment, ruled that the appeal lacked merit.

The court also awarded costs of ₦1 million against the appellant and in favour of the respondent, rights advocate and public interest lawyer, Abubakar Marshal.
