JUST IN: Army Launches Probe As Soldier Kills Wife, Self At Wawa Cantonment


THE Nigerian Army has confirmed the death of one of its personnel, Lance Corporal Akenleye Femi, who allegedly shot his wife dead before taking his own life at Wawa Cantonment, Niger State.

According to a statement issued on Sunday, 12 October 2025, by Captain Stephen Nwankwo, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 22 Armoured Brigade, Ilorin, the tragic incident occurred on Friday, 11 October 2025, within the barracks, leaving residents in deep shock.

The statement said:

“The 22 Armoured Brigade, Nigerian Army, is aware of the news in respect of its personnel, Lance Corporal Akenleye Femi, serving at 221 Battalion, Wawa Cantonment, who is suspected to have killed his wife and committed suicide.”

The deceased couple were reportedly found lifeless in their apartment at Block 15, Room 24, Corporals and Below Quarters within the Cantonment.

Preliminary investigation, according to the Army, revealed that Lance Corporal Femi, who was on duty at the time, had sought permission from his superior officers to attend to personal matters before the tragedy struck.

“The remains of the deceased have been preserved, while an in-depth investigation has since commenced to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident,” the statement added.

Expressing sadness over the development, the Nigerian Army extended its condolences to the bereaved family and friends of the deceased.

“The Nigerian Army deeply regrets this, while it commiserates with the family, colleagues, and friends of the deceased over the painful loss. The Army also prays for the peaceful repose of their souls.”

The Commander of the 22 Armoured Brigade, Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, assured the public that the matter would be thoroughly investigated, promising transparency in the process.

“The circumstances that led to the sad incident will be thoroughly investigated, and the outcome relayed to the general public accordingly,” he stated.

He also appealed for calm and cooperation from the public, assuring that the Army would take necessary steps to prevent such tragedies in the future.

“The outcome of the investigation will not only be made public, but further scrutinised, and measures put in place to avoid future occurrences,” the statement concluded.
