‘My Pain Is That I Supported Tinubu Despite Knowing His Past’ – El-Rufai

By Micheal Chukwuebuka

THE former governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-rufai, has expressed regret over supporting President Bola Tinubu despite being aware of his questionable past.

In an interview with BBC Hausa on Saturday, March 15, 2025, El-Rufai confessed that he backed Tinubu hoping he would replicate his achievements as Lagos State governor on a national level.

El-Rufai acknowledged that Tinubu’s past controversies, including allegations of certificate forgery and involvement in cocaine trafficking, were well-known.

However, he believed that if Tinubu could overcome his challenges in Lagos, he could do the same for Nigeria. Unfortunately, Tinubu failed to meet El-Rufai’s expectations.

El-Rufai’s disappointment stems from the fact that he and others supported Tinubu despite his sordid past, only to be let down by his performance as president.

This sentiment is a stark contrast to his previous stance, where he dismissed claims of opposing Tinubu, stating that he had moved on.

“What pains me is that the government we supported and had confidence in would do well, because we saw what Tinubu did in Lagos despite his challenges.

“We all know about his issues in Chicago, but we thought if he could replicate his work in Lagos for Nigeria, let’s support him. However, he failed.”
