Nigerian Father Questions Boyfriend Before Allowing US-based Daughter To Date

A woman has shared the shocking number of questions her Nigerian father wants answered before he allows her to date.

Uzo Njoku, 28, an artist from Manhattan, New York, revealed an elaborate 20-question document on X, which featured enquiries about what her potential man does for a living, his medical history and how many women he dated in the past.

The exhaustive list also sought to find out whether he smokes cigarettes, if and how often he drinks alcohol and if he graduated from university.

Uzo, whose painting and artwork has been featured in projects by Rolling Stone, Apple Music and YSL Beauty, appeared unimpressed by the line of questioning, and added two angry face emojis to her post.

But while she may have fumed at her father’s request, others have praised his efforts, saying it is typical of Nigerian fathers who have their daughter’s ‘best interests at heart’ and called him the ‘best dad’.

‘My dad sent me a 20 question pdf about my boyfriend that I have to answer before I can introduce them. Nigerian fathers,’ wrote Uzo.

She followed this up with another post, where she added a screenshot of the lengthy document and its questions, titled: ‘Questions requiring honest and verifiable answers’.

Uzo only previewed 11 of them, and explained that she removed ‘some of the very very personal questions’.

The questions were numbered from one to 11, with the first one asking: ‘What are important personal stories that shaped who he is today?’

The second implored Uzo to investigate where her prospective boyfriend went to university and whether he flunked out or graduated.

‘Does he have a family history of diabetes mellitus, blood disorders, sickle cell traits, sickle disease and cancers?’ read the third.

As the the letter continued it became even more meticulous, with her concerned father questioning if he’d had any surgical procedures done in the past.

Some demanded to know who he was currently living with and why he had parted ways with ex flames in the past.

Up next were a set of serious questions, including some that covered his abidance to the law.

They read: ‘Does he smoke cigarettes, drink alcohol (state frequency and how many drinks per occasion)

‘Has he ever used illicit/recreational drugs?’ it concluded.

The last line of questioning was emotive in nature, and attempted to scrutinize how he made Uzo feel, as well as how she felt about him.

‘Does he make you feel supported and safe?’ her father allegedly asked.

‘What do you like most and least about him?’ read the final question.

The post – which has been viewed nearly 2.5 million times – elicited a wave of both hilarious and supportive responses.

One man asked for a copy of the pdf so he could use it for his ‘future daughters’.

Another commented: ‘Your dad is a top guy. Things fathers who have the interest of their children at heart should do’.

‘You have the best Dad. These are real life questions’ wrote one woman.

Meanwhile, one man said: ‘If these are the questions they will use and judge me [by] I will pass 100/100’.

X users also speculated if her father had grown ‘tired’ of meeting Uzo’s potential boyfriends, and if this was as the reason for the unorthodox questionnaire.

However she later replied that this was the first time she planned to introduce a man to her parents.
