Ola ‘Kiya, Reporting
MILLIONS of naira were lost in the early hours of Tuesday when a fire ravaged a one-storey building on Somoye Osundare Street, Computer Village, Ikeja, Lagos.
According to a statement from Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the entire top floor of the commercial building was completely consumed by the fire.
The building, which houses dealers in computers and accessories, was engulfed in flames, with goods and properties worth millions of naira destroyed.
At the time of this report, the cause of the fire had not yet been determined, though investigations are underway.
The statement read in part: “Upon the arrival of the LASEMA Response Team (LRT) at the scene at 02:15 hours, it was observed that a fire had occurred in a one-storey commercial building that accommodates dealers in computers and accessories in Computer Village, Ikeja.
“Responders noted active flames and dense smoke, indicating intense combustion within the structure.
“The building serves as a storage and sales point for computers and accessories, and the high volume of combustible materials present contributed to the rapid spread of the fire.
“One firefighter from the Lagos State Fire Service sustained minor injuries during the operation and was treated on-site by LASAMBUS.
“A physical examination of the building revealed partial structural damage, which now requires immediate assessment.
“Upon arrival, the LASEMA Response Team conducted a risk assessment and cordoned off the affected area.
Safety and precautionary measures were activated to prevent damage to nearby buildings and the surrounding environment.
“Through prompt intervention by the LRT and other responders, the fire was successfully contained and prevented from spreading to adjacent structures.
Firefighting operations have effectively suppressed the flames, and the fire was ultimately extinguished.
The statement also confirmed that the rescue and recovery operation has been concluded.
