Physically-Challenged Braces The Odds, Passes Out Of NYSC

Ola ‘Kiya, Reporting

A physically-challenged, Mr Ikiotere Ayebatonye Otuma from Bayelsa State, has completed his one-year compulsory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

Stonix News reports that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is a “programme set up by the Nigerian government during the military regime to involve Nigerian graduates in nation building and the development of the country.

“There is no military conscription in Nigeria, but since 1973, graduates of universities and later polytechnics have been required to take part in the National Youth Service Corps programme for one year.”

Speaking with journalists, Mr Ikiotere said he refused to allow his physical limitation to hinder his desire to achieve his academic goal in life.

Stonix News reports that in most cities of Nigeria, the West African country, majority of the physically-challenged would litter the streets to solicit alms rather than seek to learn skills that could take them off the streets even amid opportunities.

Ikiotere, on his part, though a Special Assistant to the Bayelsa State Governor, did not lie low but braced up to acquire formal education against the usual primordial narrative.

“After my Senior Secondary 3, my mother met me one day and asked if I would like to learn a handcraft.

“I told her I had already picked JAMB form and I don’t want to waste time in furthering my education.

“She was impressed with my aspiration.

“And by the grace of God, in my first attempt, I got admitted to the Niger Delta University, Amassoma, to study management,” he narrated.

Ikiotere, after graduating from the Niger Delta University in Bayelsa, went for his NYSC orientation in Osun State and today, he’s a graduate.

Who says you can’t beat his record? Just dare to succeed!
