Police Suspend 2 SPY Officers Over Violation of Provisions of Police Act, 2020.

Rita Enemuru, Reporting

THE Nigerian Police Force has suspended two additional Police officers who were not full staff of the Force for discredibility and violation of Provisions of Police Act, 2020. .

The officers, Obaze Blessing and Obaze Emmanuella Uju, according to a statement issued by the Police Public Officer CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi on Friday, 26, were suspended for violation of the provisions of the Police Act, 2020.

The mode of dressing of SPY police according to section 25 (2) (3) of the Police Act mandated its SPY officers above the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police not to wear uniforms.

It also specified that they must wear their authorised uniform, which includes an ash-colour shirt with “SPY” writing on all over it, over black with the term “SUPERNUMERARY” on the shoulder insignia.

The statement claimed that the officers adorned themselves in conventional police officers’ uniforms contrary to the code regulating the Supernumerary Police (SPY) service.

One of them adorned the rank of Superintendent of Police which was contrary to extant laws.

The contravention was, however, captured in a viral video posted by one of the officers on August 3, 2022.

Following the suspension, the Inspector-General of Police IGP Usman Alkali Baba has issued a stern warning on the misuse of Police restricted uniforms as adequate santions will be meted out on erring officers.

“The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, psc(+), NPM, fdc, has issued strict warning on the incessant, illegal and unwarranted use of Police Uniforms restricted to bonafide serving officers of the Nigeria Police Force.

“This is coming on the heels of the suspension of two Supernumerary Police Officers, with immediate effect, for breach of the provisions of the Police Act, 2020, and The Nigeria Police Guidelines for Recruitment/Promotion/Discipline of Supernumerary Police (SPY) 2013 by the Inspector-General of Police, as captured in a video posted by one of the officers in a viral video on August 3, 2022.

“It is equally important to mention that in line with Section 25 (2) (3) of the Police Act, 2020 and the Nigeria Police Guidelines for Recruitment/Promotion/Discipline of Supernumerary Police (SPY), 2013 issued by the Inspector-General of Police (Guidelines for SPYs), the mode of dressing of SPY police mandates its SPY officers above the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police not to wear uniforms.

“It states that they must be on their approved uniform, ash coloured shirt with “SPY” inscriptions all over, over black with shoulder badge carrying the word “SUPERNUMERARY”.

Supernumerary Officers adorning police black, neon blue or camouflage uniforms run a foul of the law and would be adequately sanctioned.

“The suspended supernumerary officers – Obaze Blessing with SPY number 5709, and Obaze Emmanuella Uju with SPY number 5708, adorned themselves in conventional police officers’ uniforms contrary to the code regulating the SPY service,” the statement stated.
