Poor Funding Affecting Federal Universities, UI VC laments

Ola ‘Kiya, Reporting

Poor funding is adversely affecting the federal universities as the government keeps giving inadequate funds and making policies that are very limiting to tertiary institutions.

As a result, all and sundry must assist federal universities to achieve their teaching, learning and research mandates without compromising standards.

The lamentation and plea came from the Vice-Chancellor, University of Ibadan, Prof. Kayode Oyebode Adebowale, on Tuesday while inaugurating the renovated Head of Department’s office in the Department of Human Kinetics, Faculty of Education, UI.

He noted, in a statement made available by the Principal Assistant Registrar/Public Relations Officer, Directorate of Public Communication, Adejoke Akinpelu, University of Ibadan, that adequate funding was very critical to sustaining tertiary institutions and making teaching and learning conducive.

Prof. Adebowale called on private institutions and individuals to support the three government interventions: Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Needs Assessment, and Capital Appropriation Grant, that the federal government had made available to institutions.

“Government alone cannot run universities; some hands must have to come to support. We run around to scout for funds for the university,” he enthused.

The VC said he was, therefore, pleased to inaugurate the multimillion-naira self-help project that was donated by the alumni and friends of the Department of Human Kinetics.
