VETERAN defender Onome Ebi, a stalwart of the Super Falcons of Nigeria, has announced her retirement from professional football at the age of 42, bringing an illustrious 24-year playing career to a close.

Ebi, one of the most decorated players in African women’s football, leaves behind a legacy of resilience, longevity and excellence on the global stage.
During her career, she lifted four Women’s Africa Cup of Nations titles with Nigeria and enjoyed success in European club football, winning the Turkish Women’s Football League twice, the Belarusian Women’s Super Cup twice, as well as the Belarusian Premier League and Women’s Cup in 2014.

Her individual accolades include being named in the IFFHS CAF Women’s Team of the Decade (2011–2020) and in the IFFHS All-time Africa Women’s Dream Team (2021).

On the international scene, Ebi earned 109 caps for Nigeria, scoring four goals. She holds the remarkable distinction of featuring in six FIFA Women’s World Cup tournaments, making her one of the most capped and experienced players in the history of African football.

Her retirement marks the end of an era for the Super Falcons, with Ebi widely celebrated as a role model for younger generations of footballers across the continent.
