Suspected Cultists Invade Burial Ceremony, Hack 16 Mourners To Death

Michael Chukwuebuka, Reporting

Suspected members of a secret cult armed with dangerous weapons, on Saturday, hacked to death no fewer than 16 persons at a burial ceremony at Umuogbuefi village, Ebenebe in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Stonix News gathered that the ominous event was a funeral of a suspected leader of a cult identified as MR.OZOR CHIBUIKE JOSEPH CHUKWUKA.

The deceased according to a funeral poster sighted by Stonix News was shot dead on December 30, 2021 at Amansea Produce Check-Point, Anambra State.

While the corpse of 34-year-old Ozor was lying in state in his compound ahead of his interment amid dirges, some suspected cultists stormed the venue and rained pellets on everyone in sight.

A witnesse who, by sheer Providence, escaped the tragedy, narrated how it went.

“My sister was supposed to be at the burial. She and her friends had already prepared to leave Awka for Ebenebe, but the vehicle they booked to take them disappointed them.

“She and her friends were so unhappy, and they decided to go in search of another vehicle that could take them.

“It was in the course of going to the burial that they received a phone call that everybody at the burial had been dispersed by some gunmen.

“She also got a video from the scene, which showed several persons lying in the pool of their own blood dead, while the corpse of the deceased cult leader was desecrated, with its coffin lying far apart, while the corpse was sprawled on the ground,” one of the persons in the know of the horrible incident narrated.

Stonix News sighted a video footage where members of the community are wailing amid corpses littering the burial scene.

Meanwhile, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Anambra State Police Command, DSP Toochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the Saturday bloodbath.

He said the tragedy was the aftermath of a fierce clash between rival cult groups.

Amid sketchy details at his disposal, DSP Ikenga further noted that the State Commissioner of Police, CP Echeng Echeng, has, however, despatched tactical squads to maintain calm in the area.
