Tinubu and Buhari
Tinubu described Buhari’s death as a profound loss for Nigeria, noting his enduring contributions both as a military ruler and a democratically elected President.
“President Muhammadu Buhari was a leader who answered the call of duty at crucial moments in our national history. His passing marks the end of an era,” President Tinubu said.
Born in Daura, Katsina State, Muhammadu Buhari served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from January 1984 to August 1985.
Decades later, he made history by becoming the first opposition candidate to defeat an incumbent President, winning the 2015 general election. He was re-elected for a second term in 2019, serving until 2023.
In honour of the late President, Tinubu has ordered that all national flags be flown at half-mast across the country and in Nigerian missions abroad, pending further announcements on funeral arrangements.
More details regarding the funeral arrangements and public memorials are expected in the coming days.
