THE Lagos State Chapter of the University of Ibadan Alumni Association (UIAA), Lagos branch, has planned to honour some of its distinguished alumni and elders in an event tagged: 2022 Elders’ Day.
This was contained in a statement signed by the Secretary, Planning Committee, Michael Popoola Ajayi, and made available to Stonix News on Monday, October 3, 2022.
Chairman of the branch, Otunba Folaranmi Salau, said the purpose of the gathering was to facilitate idea exchange among the ancient, mediaeval, modern, and millennial generations of Uites in Lagos.
It is also to highlight the outstanding members’ contributions to the advancement of the association, the development of their alma mater, and the expansion of education in Nigeria as a whole.
The October 8 event will be presided over by a prominent industrialist, Elder Dr. Felix Ohiwerei, and is anticipated to draw a sizable number of alumni from the university as well as notable Nigerians.
Mrs. Folashade Jaji, the secretary to the Lagos State government, and Prof. Kayode Adebowale, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, will serve as Special Guest of Honour and Guest of Honour, respectively.
“We are using this event to honour and appreciate our elders as the torchbearers of the association in Lagos and outstanding members for their contributions.
“It is a fact that in the face of the recent happenings in the Nigerian education sector, we should also create avenue to celebrate the landmark contributions of some outstanding individuals and also define the roles of alumni associations to its development and growth,” Otunba Salau noted.
In the same vein, the Chairman of the Planning Committee, Mr Micheal Ola Dawodu, highlighted the importance of the event.
According to him, the event will also showcase the contributions of some outstanding members in elevating the association and education sector in general as well as brainstorming on the future of education in Nigeria.
The National Chairman, Association of Private Practicing Surveyors of Nigeria, Surv. Thomas Oluseye Dabiri, is expected to speak at the event with the theme; “Alumni and the Future of Education of Nigeria,” while Chief (Mrs) Maiden Ibru is the Mother of the Day, the statement further noted.
Other personalities slated to be Fathers of the Day are the Doyen of the Nigerian Corporate Business, Pa Dr Michael Omolayole and the Olora of Ora, Oba Adebayo Akolade.
