EARLIER this year, I was one of the panelists on career choice enlightenment organized for teenagers by Ijokodo Conference of New Covenant Church, Nigeria.
We discussed different issues such as subject combination for university admission, preparation for university, navigating through the university, academic excellence, and so on.
One of the organisers shared how her actions cost her son a whole year of his life.
When her son was in senior secondary school, a particular subject was made compulsory for his class but the boy did not like the subject.

The school insisted he must attend classes but he was not interested.
Then, he told his mum.
The mother dressed up and went to the school.
She said she went to the school and fought with the teachers. She told them not to compel her son to take the subject since he was not interested.
Eventually, the son graduated from secondary school and wrote UTME. Although he passed all his exams, he could not gain admission into the university because he did not meet the requirements. The subject he failed to register for was compulsory for his course of study.
There was no alternative.
He had to stay an extra year at home. He registered for another O’level exam just because of that subject.
Many parents do not trust teachers. But most teachers have the best interest of their students at heart. They want them to excel and succeed in life.
Learn to trust your child’s teachers while you make your research also.
Yes, there are some bad eggs but most teachers are happy when their students excel.
