A total of 174 graduates of the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, have bagged first class degrees, as the institution set for its 29th and 30th combined convocation ceremony.
This was made known to newsmen by the Vice Chancellor, Prof Nyaudoh Ndaeyo on Tuesday at the University’s Main Campus at Nwaniba, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
According to Prof Ndaeyo, the university will be graduating a total of 12,450 students during the ceremony.
He disclosed that 1,167 persons will be awarded postgraduate degrees, 10,835 others will bag bachelor’s degrees, 411 students will be awarded diplomas, while 37 persons will earn certificates.
He said the university was running a total of 100 programmes in 117 departments under 19 faculties.
He noted that the institution produced 56 first class graduates in the 2020/2021 academic session.
He added that 90 per cent of the university’s programmes had received full accreditation from the National Universities Commission.
Prof Ndaeyo said that the university management gave priority to the welfare of the students in order to ensure adequate motivation for learning.
He said, “This year’s convocation is yet another very significant milestone for this administration. It marks a combined ceremony of the 29th and 30th convocations of this great citadel of learning.
“The combined convocation has a total of 12,450 graduands. The breakdown is as follows: PhD – 303, Master’s Degree – 608, and Postgraduate Diploma – 246, bringing the total for postgraduate degrees to 1,167.
“For the 2020/2021 session, the bachelor’s degrees awarded include 56 first-class, 1,737 upper second-class, 2,336 lower second-class, 412 third-class, and 282 pass degrees, totalling 4,823.
“The diploma and certificate programmes have 176 and 5 graduands, respectively, bringing this subtotal to 5,004.
“We have entered into a public-private partnership agreement for the building and equipping of more hostels for our students. The university management attaches high premium to staff welfare and we ensure that promotions are released promptly,” he said.
Speaking further, Prof announced that the university would confer honorary doctoral degrees on Chief Effiong Afiakurue, Mrs Halima Zakari and Dr Itanwan James.
He further said that a former vice chancellor of the institution, Prof. Akpan Ekpo, would be conferred with the status of Honorary Professor Emeritus.
Speaking on challenges, Prof Ndaeyo further said that the university was facing the challenges of insecurity, inadequate funding, manpower shortage and encroachment on its land.
