A 6-year-old boy is recovering from serious injuries after being mauled by a coyote during his sister’s softball game at Del Amo Park in Carson on Monday morning.
The victim, Enoch Palomar, was with his family when the animal lunged at him, biting the back of his head and both legs before fleeing. His mother, Melissa Palomar, said she rushed to his aid after hearing his screams.
“I ran toward him and saw it was a coyote,” she said. “I made noise and it ran off.”
Stonix News reports that Enoch required 20 stitches and multiple rabies shots. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife has collected his clothing for DNA testing in an effort to track the animal.
Carson Mayor Lula Davis-Holmes expressed concern in a statement, noting that coyotes are a known presence in the area. She urged residents to remain vigilant, secure trash and food, and report sightings through the city’s Coyote Report page or by calling Wildlife and Gaming.
While coyote sightings are common in California, officials say attacks—especially on children—are rare.
