A dramatic rescue operation unfolded in Germany as a specially equipped barge carrying a stranded humpback whale began its journey towards open waters in a final effort to save the animal’s life.
The whale’s prolonged struggle for survival has captivated the nation for weeks after it became stranded near the Baltic Sea coast in late March, close to the city of Lübeck.
Rescue teams earlier managed to guide the whale into a specially adapted vessel featuring a water-filled hold, typically used for transporting boats. The ambitious plan aims to return the mammal to deeper waters and ultimately back to its natural habitat.
The operation has attracted widespread public attention, with many following developments closely as hopes remain high for a successful outcome. The rescue effort was reportedly financed by two private entrepreneurs determined to give the whale a final chance of survival.
However, marine experts have voiced concerns over the strategy, warning that the transport process could place additional stress on the already weakened animal. Critics argued that the prolonged handling may cause further distress rather than improve its prospects.
Despite the scepticism, optimism grew as the rescue barge departed, with supporters hoping the extraordinary mission could defy expectations and offer the whale a route back to the open sea.
