THERE’S palpable fear as hoodlums, on Wednesday, broke into a cell of the Okrika Police Division, in Okirika, Rivers State, freeing all inmates.
The gunmen reportedly carried out the dastardly act at about 2:00a.m last Tuesday.
A police source said the incident had been reported to the Police Headquarters in Abuja and the state Police Command, Moscow Road, Port Harcourt.
“The hoodlums broke the padlock of the cell, and also opened the backdoor of the cell where the inmates escaped from around 2am on Tuesday,” the source told The Nation.
The acting Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Rivers Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident.
She said the Commissioner of Police, Friday Eboka, had immediately ordered his Deputy, Patrick Longe, to investigate the matter.
She added that the cops on duty during the invasion had been picked up and detained to assist with the investigation
