THE Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barr Nyesom Wike, has issued a direct challenge to the Senate Minority Leader, Abba Moro, urging him to present clear-cut proposals for resolving the ongoing crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), whilst condemning any clandestine manoeuvres.
Addressing the party’s 106th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja, the former Rivers State Governor did not mince his words. “When you speak of reconciliation, you must arrive with transparent terms,” he stated. “I have little time for those who conduct their negotiations behind closed doors only to grandstand publicly afterwards.”
Wike vehemently refuted claims that his involvement in the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration renders him a “mole” within the opposition, reaffirming his steadfast commitment to the PDP.
Pouring cold water on suggestions to establish yet another caretaker committee, Wike emphasised that all arrangements for the party’s forthcoming national convention are complete. “The party has been working tirelessly; the venue is secured and the deposits have been paid. The convention will proceed as planned, with every member entitled to take part,” he insisted.
Asserting that his faction remains firmly in the driving seat amidst the party’s internal turmoil, Wike declared, “We are open to reconciliation, but it must be genuine. We will only negotiate from a position of strength.”
His remarks come after Abba Moro had earlier appealed for unity, stressing that the party’s survival must eclipse personal political ambitions. “Whether I stand for election in 2027 or not, the wellbeing of the PDP is what truly matters,” Moro remarked.
In a similar vein, the House of Representatives Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda, hailed a recent Court of Appeal ruling concerning the party’s leadership as a significant fillip for both the PDP and Nigerian democracy. He voiced confidence that the judgment would revitalise faith in the party and draw in new members ahead of future electoral contests.
