Daniel Reflects on Rift with Amosun at 70th Birthday Thanksgiving

Blessing Bello, Reporting

FORMER Ogun State governor and Senator representing Ogun East, Gbenga Daniel, has opened up on his long-standing rift with his successor, Ibikunle Amosun, describing their relationship as one shaped by political tension and personal trials.

Daniel made the remarks on Monday during his 70th birthday thanksgiving service held at the Abraham Tabernacle in Sagamu, where he reflected on the circumstances that led to their fallout ahead of the 2011 governorship election.

The former governor, who led Ogun State from 2003 to 2011, explained that the disagreement stemmed largely from Amosun’s ambition to succeed him.

At the time, Daniel had backed Gboyega Nasir Isiaka of the Peoples Party of Nigeria (PPN), while Amosun contested under the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).

According to Daniel, tensions escalated as both men pursued their political aspirations, with Amosun determined to clinch the governorship.

He described the aftermath of the transition as difficult, noting that he “went through hell” during his successor’s administration.

Daniel cited actions taken by the succeeding government, including the closure of his multi-billion naira hotel in Abeokuta and investigations into his tenure by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Despite the history of hostilities, the former governor struck a conciliatory tone, suggesting that time and spiritual intervention had helped mend relations between the two political figures.

“We started the race together, but he was in so much in a hurry to become governor. You fought and you won the election, and there’s nothing we can do about it,” Daniel said in a light-hearted remark, while also acknowledging prayers from clergy for reconciliation.

The rift between Daniel and Amosun had previously triggered one of the most notable political crises in Ogun State, particularly during the 2011 elections, when both camps were sharply divided.
Beyond the political reflections, Daniel used the occasion to advocate for the creation of Ijebu State in the South-West, appealing to the Rasheed Ladoja, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, for support.

Meanwhile, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, represented by his deputy, commended Daniel’s legacy, praising his contributions to governance, innovation and economic development in the state.

In his sermon, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Enoch Adeboye, described Daniel as an “exceptional leader” who demonstrated integrity and consistency in office.

He noted that the former governor stood out among past leaders for keeping his promises and upholding strong moral values.

The thanksgiving service drew dignitaries from across Nigeria, including Demola Adeleke, Bola Obasanjo, and several traditional rulers, former military administrators and diplomats, all of whom gathered to celebrate Daniel’s life, legacy and contributions to public service at 70.
