THE African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called on the Federal Government to implement a temporary price cap on petrol, warning that relentless hikes are deepening the cost-of-living crisis for millions of Nigerian households.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party acknowledged that volatility in global oil markets—fueled by ongoing tensions in the Middle East—may be influencing the recent price surges. However, it insisted that external factors should not excuse unchecked price increases in an economy still reeling from the sudden removal of the fuel subsidy under the Tinubu administration.
“For everyday Nigerians, petrol determines the price of food, transport, and survival. When petrol rises, everything else rises with it,” Abdullahi said. “The APC-led government must, for once, be responsible by taking action to shield citizens from the harshest effects of these hikes.”
The ADC also called for the introduction of targeted palliatives for low-income earners, who are bearing the brunt of the rising costs.
In addition, the party raised concerns over the government’s plan to distribute 100,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion kits—a move it described as well-intentioned but woefully inadequate. With over 11 million vehicles on Nigerian roads, the ADC noted that the kits would cover less than one percent of the nation’s fleet.
“Beyond the numbers, the limited availability of CNG refuelling stations across the country raises serious questions about accessibility,” the statement continued. “A policy that cannot be accessed by the majority risks becoming nothing more than a hollow announcement.”
The ADC urged the government to pursue a more credible and comprehensive energy strategy that reflects Nigeria’s status as an oil-producing nation.
“It should not be that in a country that produces oil, the cost of petrol repeatedly pushes millions deeper into hardship,” the party added. “At a time of rising global uncertainty, protecting the welfare of citizens must remain the first duty of any competent government.”
