THE Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may likely return to the trenches following Thursday payment of half October salary by the Federal Government of Nigeria.
The troubled academic body is, therefore, said to be ready to summon an emergency meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC) to look into the development.
Though no date has been fixed yet, The Punch gathered that the decision to convene a meeting followed the drama which erupted when members of the union received half salaries in their accounts.
A source who spoke to our correspondent in Abuja noted that half salaries were paid.
“I was shocked when I received an alert from my bank and I noticed that I got half salary; they didn’t even talk about the backlog of the eight months of the strike.
Another source said, “It is true, I received half, In fact, some professors received salaries of N121,000; this is the fact, we are waiting for the decision of the national body, our members are very angry right now.”
Stonix News also spoke with a staff of the University of Ibadan, who expressed displeasure at the “meagre” stipend of half salary dropped into their account by the Federal Government.
“It appears these people (FGN) have taken us for granted. How can they pay us half salary for October? What about the eight-month-old backlog? Are these people serious at all?” he quipped.
Recalled the body of lecturers resumed work on October 14 after a truss was broken by Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila.
