HEAVY traffic disruptions have hit major parts of Ibadan following another protest by students of the Omololu Olunloyo Polytechnic, who are currently demonstrating at the main gate of their institution.
The protest, which began early Tuesday morning, has led to the partial or complete blockade of key roads including the Sango-Eleyele axis, Sango-Elewure Housing, Awolowo Junction, and Bodija-Secretariat main gate under the bridge.
In a statement issued by the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA), the Executive Chairman, Maj. Adesagba Adekoya (rtd.), confirmed the ongoing situation and advised the public to avoid the affected areas.
“We are calling on all motorists heading towards Eleyele, Apete, Ijokodo, and nearby locations from Sango to make use of alternate routes such as Dugbe, Mokola or Ajibode,” Maj. Adekoya stated.
“Likewise, commuters around Sango, Elewure, Awolowo Junction, and Bodija en route Secretariat should seek alternative routes due to possible blockades from the students’ rampage.”
The traffic advisory comes amid rising tensions as students reportedly blocked the institution’s entrance in protest over undisclosed grievances. The demonstration has spilled over onto major adjoining roads, leaving many commuters stranded.
OYRTMA appealed for calm and cooperation. “We urge all road users to remain calm, cooperate with our traffic officers, and adhere to all diversion instructions to avoid unnecessary confrontations,” the statement read.
As of the time of filing this report, traffic officers have been deployed to strategic points to manage the congestion and redirect motorists.
Further updates are expected as the situation develops.
