Amid the lack of enough accommodation facilities for students, President  Buhari will be in Uyo, the Akwa-Ibom State capital on December 30, 2021, to inaugurate a modern and well-equipped students’ hostel.

The hostel was built and donated to the institution by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

A statement by the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Nyaudo Ndaeyo which, Stonix News sighted, revealed that the inauguration ceremony is scheduled for 10:00a.m on December 30th at the university’s permanent site, Usukara Offot, along Nwaniba Road, Uyo Local Government Area of the state.

The statement added that the structure, which has modern facilities such as WiFi, sports arena, food court, spacious car park, high security fence and solar lightings, among others, will accommodate 1,000 students (500 males and 500 females).

Professor Ndaeyo, in the statement, expressed excitement over the completion of the project which was started some years ago.

“We are very excited that NDDC under Mr Efiong Akwa has finally completed this hostel project which started several years ago.

“We look forward to receiving the President. The hostel will provide comfortable accommodation to our students,” he stated.

Important dignitaries, including governors of the Niger Delta states; Minister of Niger Delta, Senator Godswill Akpabio, members of the National Assembly, Vice Chancellor of the university and his management team, members of the political class and the business community are expected at the event.

Meanwhile, in another statement signed by the Chief Executive of NDDC, Mr. Effiong Akwa, the interventionist agency said that the marching orders from President Buhari to focus on projects that have more impacts on host communities of Niger Delta was what enhanced the completion of the project.

“We pushed hard to complete the hostel project because we had received marching orders from the President to focus more on projects that have immense impacts on the host communities,” he stated.

Stonix News reports that the project ranks the third major NDDC project to be Inaugurated by President Buhari since Mr Efiong Akwa was appointed the Commission’s Chief Executive on December 12 2020.

The first, it was gathered, was the agency’s Head Office inaugurated on March 11, followed by the 176-flat police barracks in Omagwa, Port Harcourt, which was inaugurated in September.

Several roads and other projects across the NDDC states have also been completed and put to use by the commission besides medical equipment and consumables and garbage trucks that were donated to state governments in the region.
