A man reportedly died from severe burns in Spain and thousands were forced to flee as wildfires raged through parts of the country on Tuesday, while a young boy in Italy succumbed to heatstroke and French cities recorded unprecedented temperatures in a heatwave sweeping Europe.
The victim, according to Spanish officials, sustained critical burns as winds of up to 70 kilometres (43 miles) per hour fanned flames through Tres Cantos, a wealthy suburb north of Madrid.
Authorities in France, Italy, and the Balkans have issued red alerts in several towns and cities.

In Italy, a 4-year-old Romanian boy died days after being found unconscious in his family’s car on the island of Sardinia. Eleven Italian cities were placed on red alert for Tuesday, with the number expected to rise to 16 on Wednesday.
Southern France, along with parts of the Adriatic and Ionian coasts in the Balkans, are also under red alert as scorching conditions persist across the continent.
