Fake CNG Cylinder Explosion Injures Three

A vehicle using a fake Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) cylinder exploded on Thursday at the NIPCO filling station in Benin City, leaving three people critically injured.

The incident occurred while the cylinder, fabricated by a local welder, was being filled.

The explosion, caused by an illegally modified CNG cylinder, left one victim with a severed leg, while others sustained various injuries.

The welder responsible has been arrested, and the scene was cordoned off as safety checks began for other vehicles.

An official from NIPCO confirmed narrowly escaping the blast, which occurred shortly after his departure.

The victims are receiving treatment at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).

The Presidential CNG Initiative (PCNGI) expressed sympathy for those affected, stressing the need for stricter safety regulations.

They urged vehicle owners to use only accredited conversion centers, as improper modifications pose a severe risk to public safety.

A full investigation is underway, and the launch of the Nigeria Gas Vehicle Monitoring System is expected soon to ensure safer handling of CNG.
