Police Warn POS Operators Against Large Transactions

THE Nigeria Police Force has sounded an alarm to Point of Sale (POS) operators, urging heightened vigilance against processing suspicious large transactions that may be linked to criminal activities, particularly kidnappings.

This stern advisory comes in the wake of the recent arrest of a POS operator accused of handling ₦4,000,000 on behalf of kidnappers.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), of the Delta State Police Command, SP Bright Edafe, delivered a firm warning, stressing that transactions above ₦500,000 could land POS operators in severe legal trouble.

He explained that these large amounts could easily implicate operators in ransom collections, risking both their business and personal liberty.

“My message to POS operators is simple: any transaction above ₦500,000 can drag you into deep trouble.

“Don’t allow yourself to become a middleman for kidnappers to collect ransom. These transactions can always be traced back to you,” said SP Edafe.

He cited the case of the arrested operator, who facilitated the transfer of ₦4 million for kidnappers, earning only ₦40,000 as a commission.

“Imagine receiving ₦4,000,000 from kidnappers and taking home just ₦40,000. It’s not worth it.

“You may think you’re just doing business, but before your lawyer can free you, you might spend time in jail.”

The police have stressed the need for POS operators to exercise extreme caution when handling significant sums, warning that negligence could lead to grave legal consequences.

This case highlights growing concerns about the use of financial networks, such as POS operators, in aiding ransom payments for kidnappings.

Authorities are now intensifying efforts to crack down on these financial links to disrupt the growing wave of ransom-related crimes.
