Goods worth millions destroyed as midnight fire razes Balogun Market in Lagos

Wailings pervaded popular Balogun Market in Lagos State on Thursday morning following a fire outbreak that ripped through a section of the market destroying goods worth millions of naira.

The fire incident, which reportedly started at midnight of Thursday, left several traders in grief of losses just about nine days to 2021 Christmas.

Stonix News gathered that many of the traders lamented that they had stocked millions of goods for end-of-year sales before the fire incident occurred.

It could not be ascertained if it was a sabotage or the handiwork of electrical fault.

Those badly hit by the inferno were mostly traders selling clothes and bags.

One of the affected traders, identified simply as Iya Akande, broke down in tears while narrating the incident to The Punch.

She lamented that some of them took loans to purchase goods ahead of Christmas and the New Year.

“I just came to the market to open my shop and saw many traders crying. I looked up and saw that our goods have been gutted by fire.

“We are in trouble. Many of us took loans to get goods so that we can make much profit during this festive period.”
