IN view of the upcoming planned protest, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, PhD, has held an emergency meeting with tactical commanders of the Nigeria Police Force to emphasise the principles of professionalism and adherence to the rule of law in managing public demonstrations.
The emergency meeting, which was held at the Goodluck Jonathan Peacekeeping Hall, Force Headquarters in Abuja, included the following leaders of units: Police Mobile Force (PMF), Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU), and Special Protection Unit (SPU).
According to a press statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP stated the importance of maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, adding that while the right to peaceful protest is a fundamental democratic right, it is imperative that officers ensure the protests do not escalate into violence in the light of recent intelligence.
The IGP ordered the strategic deployment of police forces across the nation, directing all commanders to withdraw officers from extra-policing services to ensure all squadrons and bases are fully prepared to provide immediate support to their respective state commands to prevent any escalation of violence and manage protests effectively, ensuring the protection of lives and property.
“All police actions must be conducted within the ambit of the law, ensuring the safety and security of all citizens,” the statement read.
The IGP also emphasised that the safety of police officers was paramount and urged them to protect themselves and employ proactive measures in maintaining order while ensuring the protection of the public.
While encouraging members of the public to support the police in their efforts to ensure a safe and secure environment, the IGP equally advised them to view the police as strategic partners in maintaining peace and security.
