A romantic overtures that began with the promise of connection across continents has ended in tragedy and mystery in Warri, leaving a family in mourning and a young man in police custody.
Jacqueline Bolling Elton, a 60-year-old American woman, had travelled to Nigeria to meet 39-year-old Alawode Olaide, a man she had befriended online.
What was meant to be a time of companionship turned fatal on September 29th, when Ms. Elton suddenly fell ill.
She was rushed first to a private hospital in Otokutu and then referred to Central Hospital, Warri, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
The sudden death of the visitor has cast a pall of sorrow over the circumstances of her trip.
With the cause of her passing unknown, the local authorities were notified.
Mr. Olaide has been taken into custody for questioning as the police work to unravel the events that led to the tragedy.
Jacqueline Elton’s body now rests in the mortuary at Central Hospital, awaiting an autopsy that may provide answers.

The case is expected to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), as a community is left to ponder the fragile nature of trust forged in the digital age.
