Outcry As Blackout Engulfs Kenya

Micheal Chukwuebuka, Reporting

KENYANS are crying out and demanding answers after a nationwide power blackout, on Sunday Dec. 10, 2023, plunged the country into darkness.

The blackout, according to CNN Africa, was Kenya’s third countrywide blackout in the past four months.

The outage impeded various services in the country, which included the main airport in the country’s capital, Nairobi, where two terminals were without power for several hours.

Anger and frustration over recurring power disruptions grew as many Kenyans have criticized the government.

As of Monday morning, power had been restored to most parts of the country, except for some parts of Nairobi and the Coast region.

In its recent update, Kenya Power, the state-run power provider said:

“We are working round the clock to restore normalcy to the remaining areas as soon as possible.”

Reacting to the power outage via a post on X (formally Twitter), Kenya Power and Transport Minister Kipchumba Murkomen said:

“Considering the frequency of the power disruption, and taking into account the fact that JKIA is a facility of strategic national importance, we are making a formal request to the National Police Service to investigate possible acts of sabotage and coverup.”

Stonix News learnt that in recent months, Kenya has suffered countless national power outages, including on 11 November, 25 August, 4 March and in November and December last year.
