The Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. ‘Keye Abiona, is said to have confirmed the raise during a call with UCJUI on Thursday morning.

While confirming that a fee increment is happening, he noted that he can only confirm it for freshers at the moment. “it’s only for freshers.”

The new fees displayed on the portal of freshers vary across different faculties within the institution.

Some of the new intakes are to pay a gross total fee of N372,000 with a technology levy and utility levy of N20,000 respectively accumulating to N412,000.

However, in some faculties, the total amount to pay ranges from N278,000 and N203,000.

Meanwhile, Stonix News on Friday morning gathered that students of the institution are spoiling for a showdown with the school authorities, describing the development as insensitive and callous given the hardship in the country.

The leadership of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union has, therefore, condemned the increase in tuition fees for freshers by the institution’s management.

In a statement on Thursday night signed by the President, Samson Tobiloba, and General Secretary, Olaniyi Sodeeq, the union condemned the increment by the management.

The union also noted it had confirmed that there is a “possible upward review of returning students fees.

“We note with concern that this increment represents about 450% – 750% of the previous bundle fee which ranged from about N20,000 – N30,000.

“This is coming at a period when several students are finding it hard to cope with the current fees regime, and increased cost of living in the country.

“The union condemns this increment in strong terms, and requests that this proposed increment be reverted to the status quo.

“We are equally requesting a meeting with the university management towards resolving this issue.

“Greatest fresh students, we are, by this release, requesting you to exercise patience while we work to resolve this,” the statement of the students leadership read in part.
