The Delta State Police Command has firmly debunked claims of a terrorists’ invasion at Girls’ Secondary School, Utagba-Ogbe, Kwale, describing the circulating rumour as baseless and capable of causing unnecessary panic.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, said the alarm — which spread rapidly among students and was later fuelled by unverified online posts — had no element of truth.
He said the supposed incident, reported at about 9:30 a.m., was nothing more than misinformation misconstrued as an attack.
Following the rumour, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, immediately dispatched the Divisional Crime Officer of Kwale Division, SP Udofia Kufre, alongside a patrol team to the school to ascertain the situation.
According to the police, both the Vice Principal and the security guard on duty affirmed that no gunshots were heard and no intrusion occurred.
Their accounts confirmed that the panic originated from false information shared among students.
As part of precautionary measures, police operatives also visited nearby schools within the Kwale area and found teaching and learning activities ongoing without disruption.
The Command urged parents who rushed to the school to remain calm, assuring that normalcy had been restored and there was no cause for alarm.
CP Abaniwonda cautioned the public against spreading unverified reports capable of triggering fear, especially within school environments.
He reiterated the Command’s commitment to responding promptly to credible threats and safeguarding all educational institutions in the state.
He further encouraged school administrators to improve internal communication, swiftly report suspicious behaviour, and maintain collaboration with security agencies to enhance safety around school facilities.
