THE Rivers State Police Command has rescued the five students of the Rivers State University, Nkpolu-Oroworukwo, Port Harcourt, who were abducted from the institution’s satellite campus in Emuoha Local Government Area earlier in the week.
The incident, which reportedly occurred on Tuesday, triggered fear among students and sparked a protest on the campus as they demanded immediate relocation to the main campus for their safety.
Addressing the aggrieved students, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Isaac Zeb-Obipi, announced a temporary shutdown of academic activities at the Emuoha campus and instructed all students living there to vacate the premises pending further notice.
Confirming the rescue on Thursday, the spokesperson for the state police command, Grace Iringe-Koko, said the students were freed unhurt during a coordinated operation carried out at Rumuodogo 02 by police tactical units working alongside other security agencies.
In a statement, Iringe-Koko disclosed that the abducted undergraduates, four males and one female, had been taken to the hospital for medical evaluation, and assured the public that security operatives were intensifying efforts to apprehend the fleeing suspects.
The rescued students were identified as Prince London ‘M’, Azubuike Kelechukwu ‘M’, Elizabeth Aniete ‘F’, Onyebuchi Precious ‘M’, and London Sampson ‘M.’
