In my journey as a teacher, I have met different kinds of teachers: the good, the bad, and the ugly.
Some time ago, I experienced a funny situation; it happened in a government-owned secondary school in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, Nigeria.
There was this ‘senior’ teacher who taught Mathematics. She wasn’t doing her job, but then she was a senior. However, she was teaching a sensitive subject: Mathematics.

The first step the principal took was to assign her to JSS 1. As a senior teacher, she was supposed to teach JSS 3 students. It was a junior secondary school, but assigning her to teach students who were preparing for an external joint examination would simply have been an act of wickedness; it would have been an injustice to those children. The senior teacher would not go to class.

One day, I was passing by the JSS 1 block of classrooms when I saw a small girl, obviously in JSS 1, writing notes on the board.
She was writing Mathematics notes on the board, and no teacher was in the class.
I was dumbfounded.
So, the senior teacher sent Mathematics notes to JSS 1 students to copy! Who does that?
Although I had heard rumours about the senior teacher’s lazy and nonchalant attitude to work, I never imagined it could be that bad!
Some time later, the principal made an unusual announcement during the teachers’ meeting.
The senior teacher would no longer teach Mathematics; she would now teach CRS (Christian Religious Studies). Two corps members were also assigned to her to assist. Obviously, the corps members would be the ones teaching.

Was she happy about the development? No, she wasn’t; she saw it as an embarrassment and a slap on her face. Nevertheless, she accepted the principal’s decision, and the children were rescued.
I wonder how many ‘senior’ teachers are out there…
