UPDATE: Kuje Prison Attack: Several Boko Haram Inmates Freed, Moved Away In Trucks

Muhammed Abubakar, Reporting

Heavily armed gunmen who invaded the Kuje Medium Correctional Centre in Abuja late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning are said to have freed several Boko Haram inmates.

Stonix News had reported that the gunmen invaded the correctional centre around 10.30p.m, engendering heavy bombardments that lasted for over an hour.

It was gathered that the invading gunmen, who came with trucks, went away with Boko Haram inmates at the Correctional centre.

After the operation, other inmates, apart from Boko Haram members taken away by the gunmen, also escaped.

Sources said that after the attack, not more than 30, out of the over 1, 000 inmates, were found at the correctional centre.

Stonix News had also reported that some of the attackers gained entry through the back of the prison yard, while others arrived with trucks which they used to evacuate the targeted inmates.

Meanwhile, former aide to President Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri, has faulted the harbouring of high profile terrorists in a medium security prison like that of Kuje in Abuja.

In his social media handles on Wednesday, the self-styled Table Shaker, rhetorically averred: “Unknown Gunmen have gotten to Abuja? And they helped Boko Haram members escape from Kuje prison? What has Nigeria become? Is anyone in charge of this country?

“And when Gov Ortom said bandits could overrun Aso Rock and Abuja on Channels, he was almost yanked off air!

“First of all, how will a government keep high profile terrorists in a medium security prison?

“It makes no sense and is a dereliction of duty. America keeps al-Qaeda and Islamic State prisoners in Guantanamo Bay.

“These guys should have been at Ita Oko under heavy military guard!

“Boko Haram’s attack on Kuje, which freed many arrested terrorists is a very sad development. Because unknown to the public, the release of those terrorists was one of the things the Buhari administration was using to negotiate with them. Now they have escaped, Buhari has lost that leverage!
