PSC Slams ‘Extrajudicial Killing’ Of Delta Man, Pledges Full Reckoning For Errant Officers

Muhammed Abubakar, Reporting

THE Police Service Commission (PSC) has issued a blistering condemnation of the killing of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi by police officers in Delta State, vowing that those responsible will be held fully to account.

Mr Ogidi was shot dead on April 26, 2026, by officers attached to the Effurun Area Command.

In a sharp rebuke released on Wednesday, the PSC described the act as entirely extrajudicial, saying it violated both Nigerian statutes and international humanitarian standards.

According to a statement signed by the Head of Press, Protocols and Public Affairs, Mr Torty Njoku Kalu, the killing ran contrary to a litany of legal frameworks, including the International Humanitarian Law, the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Anti-Torture Act 2017, the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015, the Nigeria Police Act 2020, and the Police Force Regulations 2025.

The Commission, however, stopped short of blanket condemnation of the force, praising the Delta State Commissioner of Police for taking swift internal action.

The CP has since suspended and interdicted the officers involved, pending the outcome of a thorough investigation.

“The Commission extends its deepest condolences to the bereaved family,” the statement read, “and enjoins members of the public to remain calm as justice takes its course.”

The killing has reignited public debate over police brutality and accountability, with civil society groups watching closely to see whether the promised disciplinary proceedings will result in meaningful consequences for the errant officers.

For now, the PSC’s uncompromising language has offered a sliver of reassurance to campaigners, though many insist that only tangible justice for Mene Ogidi will suffice.
