Akwa Ibom’s Jet Maintenance Budget Sparks Public Concern

THE APC Media Network has raised concerns over the Akwa Ibom State Government’s approval of ₦20 billion for the maintenance and servicing of its single state-owned jet.

This significant expenditure has prompted questions about fiscal responsibility, particularly when compared to the Federal Government’s allocation of the same amount for maintaining eleven aircraft.

According to the APC Media Network in a statement on Friday, the Federal Government’s allocation of ₦20 billion for eleven jets translates to approximately ₦1.8 billion per aircraft.

In contrast, the Akwa Ibom State Government’s decision to allocate ₦20 billion for just one jet has led to widespread scrutiny over the justification for such a substantial cost.

Critics argue that this raises concerns about the management of public funds.

In light of this, Otuekong Iniobong John, Director General of the APC Media Network in the Friday statement which he signed, is urging the state government to provide a detailed breakdown of the maintenance expenses.

The organisation demands full disclosure on the specific services, repairs, and the vendors involved, emphasising the need for transparency and accountability in the use of public funds.

The group further calls on the Akwa Ibom State Government to reconsider its budgetary priorities.

They urge the administration to redirect funds towards critical sectors such as infrastructure, education, and healthcare rather than the upkeep of a government-owned jet.

It has been noted that the state government plans to put the aircraft to commercial use in a bid to reduce governance and maintenance costs.

While this move is seen as a step towards fiscal responsibility, questions remain over the necessity of such a high maintenance budget in the first place.

The APC Media Network has expressed hope that the Akwa Ibom State Government will take their concerns seriously and ensure greater transparency and accountability in the management of public funds.
