Delta Ranks First, Overtakes Edo In Human Trafficking – Delta AG

Rita Enemuru, Reporting

DELTA State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Ekemejero Ohwovoriole, SAN, says it’s disheartening to note that the state now ranks first in human trafficking, overtaking Edo State.

Ohwovoriole lamented the increasing rate of human trafficking in his office in Asaba during the visit of the Zonal Commander of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Mr Nduka Nwawenne on Monday.

The NAPTIP commander had earlier informed the commissioner that the State had overtaken Edo State and was now ranked number one in human trafficking in Nigeria while requesting space for their officials to operate in Asaba.

In reaction to this, the Attorney-General said that Delta State taking the first position in Human Trafficking activity was against the dignity of the state.

He emphasized the need for stakeholders to step up and curb the menace, adding that if it was one single victim that was rescued, they would be rewarded for their efforts.

Ohwovoriole stated that young girls were the most vulnerable ones in the issue of human trafficking, stressing that children from poor family backgrounds also fall victim to human trafficking.

He declared that NAPTIP’s request for an office space in the state would be looked into, to see how the government could be of assistance to them while assuring them of his ministry’s partnership in the fight against human trafficking.

He said that the task force on human trafficking and irregular migration, which he chairs, should be having regular meetings.
