MINISTER of State for Education, Suwaiba Ahmad, has criticized the governors of Bauchi, Katsina, Kebbi, and Kano states for closing schools during Ramadan.
Ahmad emphasized that there’s no religious basis for shutting down schools during this period, pointing out that even Saudi Arabia, a predominantly Muslim country, keeps its schools open.

According to Ahmad, closing schools for Ramadan can harm student learning and is unnecessary.
She acknowledged that states have autonomy over their education systems but stressed the importance of prioritizing education.
The ministry’s role is to engage with states and advocate for policies that support student learning.
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has also expressed concerns about the school closures, warning that this could widen the educational gap in the region.
CAN suggested alternative arrangements, such as adjusting school hours, to accommodate students who observe Ramadan.
