Eight Confirmed Dead As NRC Suspends Abuja-Kaduna Train Operations

Ola ‘Kiya, Reporting

Eight passengers onboard the Kaduna-bound train have been confirmed dead following Monday evening terrorists’ attack on the Abuja -Kaduna train, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC).

This is just as the NRC has suspended train operations along the route while the Kaduna State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, has said the evacuation of passengers on the trapped Kaduna-bound train from Abuja has been concluded Tuesday morning.

He said the evacuation was carried out by security forces, officials of Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and Nigerian Red Cross.

In a message posted on its booking website and social media handles in the early hours of Tuesday, the NRC said it was suspending the service for the safety of travellers.

The corporation, however, said it was working to restore the service, and would inform the public when the train will start running again.

Stonix News has reported that terrorists, on Monday night, bombed and successfully immobilised the 970 passenger-filled Abuja-Kaduna train.

It was gathered that the terrorists planted explosives on the rail tracks and bombed the train just before Rijana, a community along the rail line in Kaduna notorious for kidnapping and other security breaches.

Meanwhile, the Kaduna State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, said in a statement on Tuesday morning, that passengers, who had sustained injuries, and other fatalities, have been moved to hospitals.

The statement noted that passengers were evacuated from different hard-to-reach areas in forests and rocky locations in Audujongom, off the Kaduna-Abuja Road.

“As stated yesterday( Monday) the Kaduna State Government is still liaising with the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) to ascertain the list from the passengers manifest for efficient tracking.

“Governor Nasir El-Rufai, who commended all those who participated in the evacuation, appealed to the hospitals to attend to the victims diligently.

“The governor also directed the Ministry of Health to be in contact with the hospitals as government will bear the cost of their treatment.
